Driver CPC Training: How to Get and Keep It
If you hold or are taking a licence category C1, D1, C, plus the +E entitlements, then CPC training will:
- improve your knowledge and skills before you start driving
- develop your knowledge and skills throughout your working life
- improve road safety through better qualified drivers
If you are a new driver or new to CPC training, you must pass an initial Driver CPC qualification before you can drive professionally, so getting the right CPC training is very important.
The initial Driver CPC training qualification is split into four parts and Sirens Driving Academy will be able to help you with CPC training for:
- Part one - theory test (multiple-choice and hazard perception)
- Part two - case studies
- Part three - practical test of driving ability
- Part four - vehicle safety demonstration
You must pass all four parts to be able to drive professionally, so get the right CPC training now.

Once you have had your CPC training and after passing all four modules of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) initial qualification, drivers will be sent a Driver Qualification Card (DQC). This proves that they hold Driver CPC.
Drivers who hold a UK photo card driving licence, will be sent their DQC after taking the relevant CPC training and passing all four initial qualification tests.
Drivers with a paper licence must exchange it for a photo card licence in order to receive their DQC.
If you passed prior to 10th Sept 2008 for PCV and 10th Sept 2009 for LGV, then study the chart below to decide when you need to take your CPC training by;
Driver CPC Training Introduction Dates and Licence Categories
| Driver CPC Training introduced | Licence Type | Licence categories |
| 10 September 2008 | Bus and coach with more than nine seats | D, D+E, D1 or D1+E |
| 10 September 2009 | Lorry | C, C+E, C1 or C1+E |
Do Existing Drivers With ‘acquired rights’ Need CPC Training?
Professional drivers who hold a relevant licence issued before the introduction of Driver CPC training have ‘acquired rights’.
These ‘acquired rights’ are valid for five years from the introduction of Driver CPC training. However, drivers with D, D1, D+E and D1+E entitlement on their driving licence stating ‘not for hire or reward’ (Code 101) do not have ‘acquired rights’.
They will have to take the initial qualification tests to drive for a living, so will need some PCV and CPC training. Drivers with ‘acquired rights’ must complete periodic CPC training during the five-year period to keep their Driver CPC.
